Kailo® (pronounced Ky-lo): 1. Indo-European word meaning to be “whole,” uninjured,” or “of good omen.” 2. The name of the award-winning wellness initiative at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Mission

To support the mission and values of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by creating and integrating programs and services to support and promote the health and well-being of Mercy colleagues from a holistic perspective of care, compassion, and respect.

Vision

Caring for ourselves as well as we care for our patients.

Values

Holistic Perspective
We define health as a relative and dynamic state resulting from a complex convergence of mind-body-spirit influences as well as cultural, social, and economic factors.

Relational Importance
We honor relationships and social connectedness as a primary determinant of health and well-being.

Gender Sensitivity
We understand the impact of a patriarchal society on the health and well-being of women and men.

Health for Every Body (HFEB)
We promote normal eating, pleasurable movement, positive body image, social support, and tolerance for people of all shapes and sizes.

Mutuality
We align ourselves with our participants as allies in the mutual pursuit of wellness. We recognize by helping others, we are indeed helping ourselves.

Compassionate Support
We believe lasting, meaningful, healthy change rarely results from the use of fear, guilt, shame, or coercion but thrives best in the presence of compassionate support.

Definition of Health

Complete well-being is a fantasy. Health, whatever else it may be, is something that happens not so much in the absence of illness, but in its presence. Health can be redefined as the manner in which we live well despite our inescapable illnesses, disabilities, and trauma.

-David B. Morris, Illness and Culture in the Postmodern Age, 1998.
